The Future of Education in India: What Happens When AI Meets Scale?

India has made AI a mandatory school subject from 2026-27. What that means for a system educating 247 million students.

What does it mean to reform a school system that educates roughly 247 million students across 1.47 million schools and more than 10 million teachers? That is the question India finds itself answering right now, as artificial intelligence moves from a curious teacher’s after-hours experiment to a binding national policy.

A mandate arrives

From the 2026–27 academic year, AI and Computational Thinking becomes a mandatory subject from Class 3 onward, rolling out to Classes 3–8 first and extending to Classes 9–10 the following year. The curriculum, developed under a CBSE expert committee and reviewed by NCERT, sits within the broader architecture of NEP 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023. Notably, the framework doesn’t hand AI unchecked authority in the classroom — teachers retain final say over grading and feedback, with AI positioned as an assistant rather than a decision-maker.

More than a curriculum update

Is this simply a curriculum update, or something bigger? The scale of ambition beyond the classroom suggests the latter. The IndiaAI Mission, launched in 2024, aims to position India as a global AI leader, and government estimates suggest the country will need over 1.25 million AI professionals by 2027 to keep pace with a market growing 25–35% annually. Education, in that sense, isn’t just adapting to AI — it’s being asked to supply the workforce that AI’s growth demands.

The gap between policy and practice

Yet a gap remains between policy and practice. A 2025 study across 45 schools, 30 colleges, and 15 universities found that only 3% of institutions had deeply integrated AI into structured workflows — most use is still informal, a teacher opening a chatbot on their own initiative rather than part of a school-wide system. Higher education tells a more advanced story: a FICCI-EY-Parthenon survey of 30 leading institutions found 57% already have a formal AI policy, and over half use generative AI to build learning materials.

Mid-transition

So where does this leave Indian education? Perhaps the honest answer is: mid-transition. The mandate has arrived before the infrastructure, training, and classroom culture have fully caught up. As India’s education minister recently put it at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, AI must strengthen human judgment, creativity, and ethical responsibility — not replace them. Whether that balance holds, at a scale this size, may be the defining education story of the decade.
